Helmut Diller Sculpture Great Dane (Signed) — Midcentury, Italian

A beautifully executed midcentury animal sculpture by Helmut Diller (1911–1984), the German sculptor, illustrator, and animal specialist renowned for his exceptional understanding of anatomy and natural form.  

Diller’s work spans painting, medal design, and sculpture, but he is particularly celebrated for his lifelike animal studies—works defined by anatomical precision and an ability to capture both movement and quiet presence.   His sculptures were exhibited internationally and even selected in collaboration with major conservation efforts such as the World Wildlife Fund.  

This piece, produced within the Italian studio ANRI, reflects that cross-European craftsmanship—where master sculptors like Diller provided the artistic model, and skilled Italian carvers executed the work in finely finished wood.

The subject—a reclining Great Dane—is rendered with remarkable restraint and sensitivity. The elongated body, subtle tension through the shoulders, and gently lowered head convey a sense of calm vigilance.
