This monumental hand-carved wooden figure represents a Batak Toba guardian spirit vessel. It features an expressive face with bulging eyes, incised cheek motifs, and a stylized grin. The sculpture includes a hollow interior accessible via a removable section, confirming its role as a ritual container used to house spiritual substances.
Function & Cultural Significance:
Such vessels were used by Batak ritual specialists (datu) to store pupuk, a powerful ritual compound. These objects acted as protective guardians and intermediaries between the human and spirit realms.
