Tarahumara Ceramic Vessel with Rawhide Binding & Tripod Stand, 1950
Description
Northern Mexico, Mid 20th Century (c. 1950s)
A beautifully constructed and highly sculptural ceramic vessel attributed to the Tarahumara (Rarámuri) people of Northern Mexico, featuring traditional rawhide binding and its original hand-built tripod stand.
The vessel is hand-formed from dark-fired clay, with a rounded, melon-like body and a gently flared neck. Its surface has developed a rich, near-black patina over time, with subtle tonal variations, wear, and natural markings that speak to age and use. The finish is soft and organic rather than glossy—an authentic surface shaped by handling and time.
Encasing the form is a network of hand-cut rawhide strips, anchored at the shoulder and drawn downward in evenly spaced vertical bands. These are secured through pierced points beneath a circular rawhide collar at the neck, creating both structural reinforcement and a striking visual rhythm. The contrast between the pale, taut rawhide and the dark ceramic body gives the piece its unmistakable presence.
The underside retains a faint “Hecho en México” mark, indicating early 20th-century export or market circulation—consistent with known Tarahumara and Northern Mexican ethnographic works of this type.
The vessel is accompanied by its original tripod stand, constructed from carved wood legs and simple rod joinery, lashed together with rawhide. The stand elevates the vessel both physically and aesthetically, transforming it into a complete sculptural composition.
Traditionally, vessels of this form were used for storage or transport. Today, it reads as a highly collectible ethnographic object—equally at home in a refined interior, where its form, material contrast, and craftsmanship can be appreciated as functional sculpture.
